The Church of the Ascension on West 107th Street was founded in 1895 during a period of rapid growth in Manhattan Valley, when the neighborhood was filling with working-class Catholic immigrants, particularly Germans. In its earliest days, the parish held Mass in temporary spaces such as a brewery hall before constructing its permanent church building in 1896–1897, designed in a Romanesque style by the architectural firm Schickel & Ditmars. The congregation expanded quickly, numbering in the thousands by the early 20th century, and soon established a parish school that helped anchor its role as a community hub.The immigrant community deeply enriched the parish, bringing with them strong devotional traditions, cultural celebrations, and a close-knit spirit that shaped parish life through festivals, mutual aid, and active participation in church organizations. Over time, the parish transitioned from a predominantly immigrant congregation to a more diverse urban community, and it remains an active part of the Archdiocese of New York today.
